JoAnn Bentley was a very petitie and cute girl. I can't remember if we built the homecoming float at her house one year or not, but we definitely talked about it. JoAnn's parents bought her a shiny silver sportscar for her high school graduation. I heard that she died in a pile up of cars on a bridge in Sacto. (not the American Bridge) in the tule fog less than a year after graduation. What a tragedy.  Mary HilkerbaumerHandy

I really liked JoAnn; she was funny and perky and sweet.  The summer after we graduated, we took a road trip in her little MG to Santa Cruz where my grandmother lived.  My mother was beside herself about us two on the road alone, and told me over and over how to negotiate the transfer to Highway 17 through Oakland until I was totally exasperated with her over protectiveness.  We weren't stupid!  I shouted at her and could drive.  At 17 i thought I was pretty grown up and certainly responsible enough to visit my grandmother.  When I heard of JoAnn's death in that same little sports car I had envied her having and enjoyed so much on our trip, I shed some tears and had to reevaluate my mother's fears.  Bless you JoAnn, wherever you are.

Jo Ann Bentley lived next door to me and I grew up and knew her from grade school til the day she died.  The accident occured on the  Hwy 16 bridge just after it is merged with Del Paso Blvd, when the car she was riding in was hit by a car going in the wrong direction.  I don't know what happened to her family, but she had a younger sister.  Sorry, but I don't recall her sister's name right now.

Okay. A little brain teasing ... Jo Ann's little sister was Jerry Lee Bentley.

Wayne has it right.  We were out that night and the word was that she was innocent and hit by some drunk guys on the 12th street bridge between North Sacramento and Downtown, just the way he says.  Even as stupid as we were back then, we felt terrible for her parents......We were also drunk, badly in need of Candy Lightner.

Joann was my best friend. We met in grammar school and continued on until our first year of college at American River. I was suppose be with her the night she died . I had to work.  I continue to miss her. I remember our senior prom.  We double dated. And the guys were drunk.  Not a pleasant evening.
